In the 1960s and early 1970s, in the North East region of the U.S., there were two types of school style that the teens referred to : Hard or Collegiate. Teens would describe their peers as Hard or Collegiate. Hard was dark, unassuming, minimalist and sometimes motorcyclish. Colligiate [Coll-E-Git] was what we now refer to as Preppie.
